PROFESSIONAL UAV
OPERATOR'S COURSE

OUR MISSION

ING Robotic Aviation and Ottawa Aviation services have joined up to offer an extensive training program for the professional operation of drones. As drones become an increasingly popular industry, learning how to operate them safely becomes imperative. Focused on teaching UAV aviation knowledge requirements, this course gives students the fundamental knowledge of operating a small unmanned drone. This course applies to professionals looking to begin their own drone business or for those who operate for an organization such as first responders, inspectors, engineers, geologists, or specialists of wildlife and conservation.

“ Of all the training I have taken throughout my career, the UAV Operator training given by ING Robotic Aviation and Ottawa Aviation Services significantly surpasses them all. I received 110% value for my investment. Outstanding. ”

- Bob Holland

“ The UAV Technology course offered by ING Robotic Aviation, in conjunction with Ottawa Aviation Services, is a comprehensive course covering aspects from the Theory of Flight, current Transport Canada rules & regulations, weather, mission planning & applications, as well as an introduction to the various platforms used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle investigations. The course is thorough, well delivered by experienced personnel, and a great introduction to the uninitiated. I recommend this course to anyone with a keen interest in exploring the expanding field of UAV Technology, and how this technology could be applied to minimize costs across a number of different industries. ”

Instructors from both sides have extensive experience in their field of expertise and have delivered thousands of hours of training to aviation and UAV students.
Where does the course take place?
Our Professional UAV Operators course is held in Ottawa, Ontario. The classroom portion of the training takes place at the Ottawa Aviation and Space Museum located on Avaiton Parkway. The field component will take place at ING Robotic Aviation’s facilities in Orleans.
How often do you run the course?
Our course is offered during the first week of every month. Please see the schedule below for upcoming course dates:
  • November 22, Sunday to Saturday
Can I receive funding for this course?
Yes! Many of our students have had success applying through the Canada Job Grant program. If you are attending on behalf of an organization, the Canada Job Grant will cover ⅔ of the costs to attend, having your employer pay only the remaining ⅓ of the total cost. For more information on the program, please select your province here: http://www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/jobs/training_agreements/cjg/info.shtml. How will the course be delivered?
In order to get the most of out of the course, students are trained in small groups. The course is delivered in sequential modules by the instructors. This includes practical classroom learning, whereby students participate in interactive theory learning. Once students have successfully completed the exam, they begin the hands on learning portion of the training, whereby they are taught about the equipment in the field. This includes live flights with the helicopter and quad rotor UAV systems.
Am I legally required by Transport Canada or the FAA to take a UAV Course?
Currently, when applying for Special Flight Operations Certificates (SFOCs) in Canada or Section 333 Exemptions (in the USA), the regulatory bodies will ask UAV pilots to demonstrate the aviation training that they have taken. The Professional UAV Operators course exceeds these standards. Our course is highly recognized by these regulatory bodies.
Will I receive a UAV Pilots License?
At present, in Canada or the USA there is no UAV Pilots License. Upon completion, students will be presented with a certificate demonstrating course completion. They will also be presented with a Restricted Radio Operator Certificate. As of recently, Transport Canada has proposed amendments to their current regulatory structure. These amendments suggest that there will likely be a pilot permit, based on the knowledge requirements required for complex operations in Canada. The course is fundamentally based on these knowledge requirements and will prepare students to write this exam when implemented. For more details on these proposed amendments, please visit: http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/NPA-APM/doc.aspx?id=10294
What are my employment opportunities after the course?
Upon successful completion of this course, our students qualify for employment as a part-time operator with ING Robotic Aviation (with the addition of type qualification on the Responder Rotorcraft and an assessment of ‘fit’ with the ING team). If you are trying to find employment in the UAV field, this is an excellent opportunity.
